Ok. Update. I joined the gym. Being a new Dad at 50, I wasn’t resolved into having the “dad bod” My son will be in his teens when I’m in my 60’s! Talk about a mid life crisis!
My wife had been using a trainer some time before she became pregnant and I had worked out with one prior to that also and had enjoyed it, (even thought the first time training with him I passed out after doing about 20 minutes of lunge/squats with a 20lb kettle bell) I did however, in a few weeks see a dramatic improvement in my strength and stamina. I had never up to that point used a personal trainer. I had worked out on and off since college. I had a good understanding of form and technique since college. I worked out an old school gym. Like “Pumping Iron” old school gym. Loud music, no smoothies or juice bar, lots of mirrors and no mercy!
Getting back to the trainer. If you have ever joined a gym and just watched some people “work out” you realize how invaluable a personal trainer can be. If not for just giving you a regime and a fitness analysis, but showing you how to use the equipment properly so you don’t hurt yourself and sabotage your mission.
If you find a workout you like, read up on it. Research techniques, research results and goals. Not every workout works for everyone. We all have different goals. If you are self starter, motivate easily, find a gym and go for it. Cardio, mixed with weight training and some flexibility training can do wonders. Remember to eat properly and frequently when you start . Protein rich foods, simple carbs and water will help keep you going.
If you are not one of those self motivated people that can make as many excuses of “why not” as to “why” then a personal trainer maybe right for you. Most gyms offer this service. They usually come with a membership and are a good resource to have. If your gym doesn’t offer this, you can find a plethora of fitness studios that offer one on one training with a certified personal trainer. They can help you reach your goals with specific and targeted programs just for you. You will be more inspired to go to workout knowing you are seeing improvements and getting consistent results!
One that I have used in the past and can highly recommend is Fitness Together. They are a few locations around the area and they have everything you need for the results you want. The Cary location is the one I used. The owner/manager is Sean Zmijewski. He is great at what he does and has the skill set to get you were you want to be. They have 3-4 trainers on staff with a vast knowledge of body mechanics, training regimens, and even specialize in rehab training.
What ever you decide to do, where ever you decide to go, juts give it your best!
